Macy’s Joins the List of Stores Closing in 2025
Macy’s, one of the country’s most iconic department stores, confirmed in an announcement on Thursday, January 9, that they will be closing 66 of their stores in 2025. The planned closures were originally announced in February 2024 as part of the brand’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy, which, according to a recent press release, “is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth.”
Select stores in multiple states will be affected, including some in California, Florida, New York, Georgia, Texas and more.
And Macy’s isn’t the only retailer that is planning store closures in 2025. Party City announced at the end of last year that they are going out of business, shuttering all of its 700 stores.
While the brand hasn’t announced the exact date of the store closures, CNN reported that some employees received letters that stores would close on Feburary 28, 2025.

Store Closures Happening in 2025 (So Far)
Macy’s
Macy’s confirmed in January 2025 that it will follow through on its plan to close 150 stores over a three-year period, a plan that was originally announced in February 2024. In a recent press release, the brand says that it will close 66 stores this year in multiple states, including California, Texas and New York.
These stores are expected to close sometime in the first quarter of the year. But don’t worry: Macy’s is not shutting down. The brand is choosing to instead invest in 350 other Macy’s locations across the country. If you learn that your local Macy’s is shutting down, know that you can still shop online.
Party City
Party City is closing all of its stores (700 to be exact) in 2025. This announcement was made in December 2024. Although the brand hasn’t released the stores’ exact close date (or dates), the stores will be closing, some employees got the notice that it would be February 28.

Kohl’s
Kohl’s announced in January 2025 that it will be closing 27 of its stores across 15 states by April 2025. You can still shop Kohl’s online. The brand is known for its frequent discounts and cost-saving Kohl’s Cash program.
Store closures that happened in 2024
In case you missed it, these are all of the retailers that closed its stores in 2024. Brands close stores for a myriad of reasons. Whether due to a newer, shinier name in town stealing their customers, the increasing popularity of online shopping over in-store purchasing, missteps by top leadership, a merger with another brand or negative impacts from inflation, competition in retail is tough.
No wonder that some beloved brands decided they couldn’t keep up with business as usual in 2024. Some pivoted to an online-only model, others scaled way back and closed most of their stores while some brands experienced the worst-case scenario and went completely out of business.
Rue21
Rue21 closed all of its stores by the end of June 2024. In the weeks leading up to the store closures, the brand filed for bankruptcy for the third time in the company’s history. There are multiple reasons why Rue21 went out of business, one of which includes struggling to stay relevant teen audiences. It’s website still stands, but is not shoppable.
Express
In April 2024, Express filed for bankruptcy and announced that they would close 95 stores. But unlike Rue21, Express still stands. The brand still has 266 stores across the U.S. and a shoppable site where consumers can buy men and women’s clothing.
Outdoor Voices
In March 2024, Outdoor Voices closed all of its stores, however, you can still shop online. It’s possible, however, that Outdoor Voices stores may come back. In June 2024, Outdoor Voices was sold to Consortium Brand Partners, and according to reporting from Retail Dive, there may be store openings in 2025 with the help of new ownership. Stay tuned.
Family Dollar
In March 2024, Family Dollar announced it would close 600 stores, but that doesn’t mean it’s going out of business. The brand still has a shoppable website and there are stores located across the country (use their store locater to find the one nearest you). However, there may be more store closures, as the company announced that they aim to close 360 additional stores over the next few years.
The Body Shop
In March 2024, the Body Shop announced that it would be shutting down its U.S. operations, including all of its stores and website. There is still a shoppable The Body Shop website, but products can only be shipped to consumers in the U.K.
K-Mart
K-Mart closed almost all of its U.S. stores in 2024, with the exception of those located in Guam and the Virgin Islands. There is also one smaller K-Mart store left in Miami. There is still a K-Mart site, but browse long enough and a grey film covers the the webpage, leaving users unable to click further onto the site.
Foot Locker
Foot Locker announced in 2023 that its planning on shutting down 400 stores by 2026. If you find your local store has closed down, know that you can still shop online.
Rite Aid
Rite Aid has unfortunately been closing stores across the country since 2023. In 2024, Fast Company reported that it closed an additional 44 of its stores. However, thousands still remain open. As of January 2025, the company’s online store directory lists 1,259 store locations across multiple states, including California, Maryland, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and more. The brand also has a shoppable website.
buybuyBABY
buybuyBABY let customers know in October 2024 that they were closing all of its stores. In a statement released on their website, the brand let shoppers know that they were pivoting by focusing on “providing an exceptional online shopping experience” for consumers. And they definitely do. buybuyBABY’s online store is pretty impressive.
