It’s that time of year again when the smell of fresh notebooks and the sound of kids groaning about summer ending filling the air. Yep, it’s back-to-school season, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably already feeling the strain on your wallet. But hold onto your calculators, because I’ve put together a handy list of participating states, dates, and what you can buy without paying Uncle Sam’s share.

2024 List of State Sales Tax Free Holidays

ALABAMA: July 19-21

  • Books priced $30 or less
  • Clothing priced $100 or less
  • Computers, computer software, and school computer supplies priced $750 or less
  • School supplies priced $50 or less

ARKANSAS: August 3-4

  • Clothing priced less than $100
  • Clothing accessories and equipment (including cosmetics and jewelry) priced less than $50
  • Electronic devices
  • School supplies
  • Applies to state and local tax

CONNECTICUT: August 18-24

  • Qualifying clothing and footwear priced less than $100

FLORIDA: July 29 – August 11

  • Clothing, footwear, and certain accessories (such as wallets and bags) under $100 per item
  • Most school supplies under $50
  • Computers and related accessories under $1,500
  • Jigsaw puzzles and learning aids under $30

IOWA: August 2-3

  • Clothing or footwear under $100 per item

MARYLAND: August 11-17

  • Clothing and footwear under $100
  • For qualifying backpacks and bookbags, only the first $40 is exempt from sales tax

MASSACHUSETTS: August 10-11

  • Retail items up to $2,500, purchased for personal use

MISSISSIPPI: July 26-27

  • Clothing and footwear under $100 per item
  • Specific school supplies priced less than $100

MISSOURI: August 2-4

  • Clothing priced $100 or less
  • Personal computers and computer peripheral devices priced $1,500 or less
  • Computer software priced $350 or less
  • Graphing calculators priced $150 or less
  • School supplies priced $50 or less

NEW MEXICO: August 2-4

  • Clothing and shoes: $100 or less per item.
  • Computers: $1,000 or less per item.
  • Computer peripherals like monitors or keyboards: $500 or less per item.
  • School supplies: $30 or less per item.

OHIO: July 30–August 8, 2024

  • Clothing under $75 per item
  • School supplies or instructional material under $20 per item
  • Most tangible personal property priced less than $500

OKLAHOMA: August 2-4
